Title of the talk:

Quantitative Remote Sensing and Global Environmental Change

The Earth’s environment is experiencing significant changes, such as climate warming, sea-level rise, biodiversity loss, wild fires and severe drought intensification. Satellite remote sensing plays a vital role in change monitoring, attribution and impact assessment. However, raw satellite data cannot be directly utilized, and they need to be converted to high-level products of essential environmental variables (e.g., temperature, biomass). The first part of this talk will introduce the Global LAnd Surface Satellite (GLASS) products that I have led to develop in the past decade. The GLASS products suite includes nearly 20 products of land surface radiation energy budget, ecosystem structure and carbon cycle, and cryosphere. They are being used by many researchers from over 400 universities and institutes around the world, with a total download over 1.7 PB.

The second part of this talk will present some of our recent studies on using satellite data to address the environmental issues, such as Tibetan Plateau (TP) warming depressed by air pollution from the surrounding regions, changes in heat flux over TP impacting the drought conditions in northern China through summer monsoon, arctic sea-ice retreat and economic gains, and the climatic effects of the Three Gorges Dam.

Speaker:

Professor Shunlin Liang

Professor, Department of Geographical Sciences, University of Maryland

Professor Shunlin Liang received his BS and MS degrees from Nanjing University and Ph.D degree from Boston University. Currently, he is a professor in the Department of Geographical Sciences, University of Maryland, an Editor-in-chief of Science of Remote Sensing, and a Fellow of the IEEE. His main research interests include the physical modeling and inversion of quantitative remote sensing, the generation of global high-level satellite products, Earth’s energy budget, and global environmental change. He published more than 430 peer-reviewed English journal papers, eight English books (five of which were translated into Chinese and published in China). He was the Editor-in-chief of the nine-volume book “Comprehensive Remote Sensing “(Elsevier, 2017). He also served as an Associate Director of the State Key Laboratory of Remote Sensing Science, and the Dean of Beijing Normal University School of Geography, China.
