With deep sorrow and profound grief, we are here to inform you about the sad demise of two of our

former Heads of Department, Prof. C.J. Grant on August 26, 2020 and Prof. D.J. Dwyer on September 11, 2020.

Prof. D.J. Dwyer was appointed as the Head of Department from 1967 to 1974. Prof. Dwyer is internationally renowned for his work on third world urbanization. During the 1960-70s, Hong Kong expanded rapidly in size and complexity, Professor Dwyer addressed the increasing awareness of the problems of urbanization as well as opportunities by offering more courses in human and urban geography in the Geography curriculum. The Department therefore helped nurture government officials in planning, housing and resettlement, endowing them with the knowledge of human-environment relationships.

Professor C.J. Grant was the Head of Department from 1977 to 1988. Professor Grant was a leading authority on acid-sulphate soils and had an extensive knowledge of the soils and agriculture of Hong Kong, especially of the New Territories. His text on the soils and agriculture of Hong Kong was a seminal early study and it remains an important text for scholars in this field of study. During his tenure as Head, the Department moved from the Main Building to the Hui Oi Chow Science Building. This made possible the expansion of the Department in terms of students, staff and facilities, including our Map Library, which is today one of the best equipped in the region.

Both Professor Dwyer and Professor Grant will be dearly missed and remembered. With profound sorrow and a heavy heart, please join the Department to express our condolences to the families and deepest appreciation of the dedicated leadership and invaluable contributions provided by Professor Dwyer and Professor Grant to the Department.
