Enabling new sustainability opportunities from integrated blue sustainable development

Miss SUN Zounachuan

( Supervisor: Prof Zhenci Xu )

Abstract:

Oceans are foundational to global sustainability and human development, regulating climate, sustaining biodiversity, nourishing populations, and driving economies. Ocean-based “blue economy” industries, such as blue food, maritime logistics, marine tourism, and marine biotechnology, create jobs and stimulate value-added. However, existing ocean governance frameworks often show limitations in focusing on direct economic outputs, while overlooking the interconnected nature of ocean systems and ocean-based economies. We thus provide a paradigm shift to the “Blue Sustainable Development” framework. We suggest four interconnected pillars under the Blue Sustainable Development framework: ecological integrity, inclusive prosperity, climate resilience, and innovative governance. Those interconnections between the pillars are also crucial for amplifying synergies when determining governance strategies, promoting the achievement of multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With the enablers of technological innovation, advanced monitoring systems, and nested policies that span from local to global scales, Blue Sustainable Development will be supporting nations that rely on marine-based goods and services in accelerating their pace towards the global 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and post – 2030 Sustainable Development.
