Professor & Head

Becky P.Y. Loo is Professor (Full Professor since 2009) and Head of Geography (first female Head of Department since its establishment in 1931) at the University of Hong Kong. She is the Director of the Institute of Transport Studies at the University of Hong Kong (since 2014). She has previously taken up the Associate Deanship of the Faculty of Social Sciences (07/2008-08/2011) and Associate/Assistant Deanship of the Graduate School (04/2013-12/2015). Her core research interests are transportation and e-technologies (defined as microelectronics, informatics and telecommunications). In particular, she is interested in applying spatial analysis, surveys and statistical methods in analysing pertinent issues related to sustainability (notably carbon dioxide emissions from transport sources), regional transport infrastructure (including airports, ports and railways) and development, transit-oriented development, walkable communities, and road safety.

With a passion for excellence, Becky Loo has continued to make advances throughout her academic studies and career. In particular, she excels in international and transdisciplinary research.  In 1989, Becky Loo obtained Grade A for all her subjects in the Hong Kong A-level Examination (HKALE). In 1992, she received the Bachelor of Arts degree (major in Geography and minor in Economics) with First Class Honours from the University of Hong Kong. With the support of the Swire Scholarship and the Li Po Chun Scholarship, she completed her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) thesis (on transport and regional development) in August 1997. She then began her academic career at the University of Hong Kong. In  2006, she won the Outstanding Young Researcher Award. In 2008, she was awarded the Outstanding Teaching Award. She was a member of the winning teams (together with colleagues from engineering, medicine, and the local community) of the Most Outstanding Community Partnership Award 2011 and the Outstanding Health Promotion Project Award 2015. In 2016, she was awarded the Pegasus Medal by CILT International. In 2017, she received the CILTHK President Award. While based in Hong Kong, Becky is internationally recognized for her research achievements; and she has been invited to visit the University of Oxford as a Distinguished Visiting Scholar (DVS) in 2014 and the University of Birmingham as a Distinguished Visiting Fellow in 2015, for one month each. She has also been an invited Visiting Professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Griffith University, the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, (PUC), and the University of Montreal.

As an active researcher, Becky Loo already has over 300 research publications (including nine books and 114 research journal articles, excluding editorials and book reviews) and obtained more than HK$13.8 million and HK$16.8 million of research grants as the Principal Investigator (PI) and PI/Co-investigator respectively from various prestigious funding agencies. She was the only Asian panel member of the European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant Panel on Environment, Space and Population (SH3) in 2015 and again on Institutions, Values, Environment and Space (SH2) in 2017. In Hong Kong, she serves as an appointed non-official member of the Assessment Panel of the Innovation and Technology Fund for Better Living (FBL) established by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) Government. As a leading international scholar, Becky Loo has been invited to evaluate research grant applications for major research grant councils in Hong Kong (the Policy Innovation and Co-ordination Office; Research Grants Council) and elsewhere in China (National Natural Science Foundation of China), Europe (European Research Commission; European Science Foundation; Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council of the UK), the Middle East (Isreal Science Foundation; Research Council of Oman), North America (National Science Foundation of the USA; Social Sciences and Humanities, Research Council of Canada), and South America (Chilean Government National Fund for Scientific and Technological Development). With a commitment to serve and a vision to spearhead leading-edge academic research, Becky Loo is the Founding co-Editor-in-Chief of Travel Behaviour and Society (Elsevier), an Associate Editor of the Journal of Transport Geography (Elsevier) and an Associate Editor of Transportmetrica A: Transport Science (Taylor and Francis). She has played an instrumental role in getting Travel Behaviour and Society included in the Social Science Citation Index. She also serves on the Editorial Boards of other leading academic journals, including the International Journal of Sustainable Transportation (Taylor and Francis), Journal of Transport and Land Use (University of Minnesota & WSTLUR), Journal of Urban Technology (Routledge), International Journal of Shipping and Transport Logistics (Inderscience), and Geographical Research (CAS, & in Chinese).

While having a balanced family and work life, Becky is eager to contribute to the betterment of society through dedicated unpaid services. Her services to geographical education and the transport profession include serving as the Chair of the Hong Kong Geographical Association (HKGA) (03/2005-02/2009), President of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in Hong Kong (CILTHK) (10/2012-09/2014), Vice-Chair of the Commission on Transport and Geography of the International Geographical Union (IGU) (08/2009-07/2016) and an International Vice-President of CILT International (06/2012-05/2016). Her current public services include serving on the Harbourfront Commission, the Lantau Development Advisory Committee, the Road Safety Council, and the Transport Advisory Committee. In 2014, she served as a member of the Transport Advisory Committee Working Group on the Road Traffic Congestion. Many recommendations in the subsequent Report on Study of Road Traffic Congestion have been accepted by the Hong Kong SAR Government. In 2015, she served as a member of the Hong Kong Air Transport Licensing Authority (ATLA) Public Inquiry with regard to the Application for licence by Jetstar Hong Kong Airways Limited. In addition, she served for six years as an appointed member of Board of Directors of the Ocean Park Corporation (07/2010-06/2016) and is a trustee of the Ocean Park Conservation Foundation. In 2018, she was appointed to serve on the Committee on Accessible Transport and Travel of the Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation, and the Assessment Panel of the Chief Executive’s Award for Teaching Excellence (2018/2019).
